WAC Expands, Also Loses Bowl Tie-In and Doesn't Get Montana

Filed under:

The WAC formally announced Thursday that it was adding the University of Denver, Texas State and the University of Texas-San Antonio. While it was a joyous day for those schools, the WAC's other six members couldn't have been thrilled with the rest of the day's events.

Earlier in the day, the University of Montana declared that it was not in the school's financial interest to make the jump from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision and ultimately the WAC.

"It was a complex issue with many pros and cons," Montana president Royce Engstrom said during a news conference Thursday. "In the end, the better course is to stay with the conference we helped establish in 1963 and to continue building on its solid foundation."

The news came as a shock to WAC commissioner Karl Benson and several of the WAC's members, who thought the addition of Montana could be the lynchpin in expansion. Many saw Montana as the conference's new Boise State. The Broncos are leaving the WAC after this academic year to join the Mountain West Conference.
