A Look Back: The Downfall of Bobby Petrino

Outside of all of that playoff talk, of course, it's been the biggest story of the month in college football: The sad downfall of Bobby Petrino at Arkansas.

On April 1, Petrino was injured in a motorcycle accident. At the time, the banged-up and bruised coach was a rather sentimental figure--a beloved (to some, at least) coach who took a bad fall while out innocently cruising around on his bike.

College Baseball 360 Exclusive Video ? Josh Ludy (Baylor)

Baylor senior catcher Josh Ludy (Portland, Ind.) has all the makings of being the team MVP for a 2012 Bears team that has yet to lose in the Big 12 (18-0; no previous conference team had started better than 7-0 in Big 12 history), as part of the 24-game, school-record winning streak that ended a couple weeks ago. Baylor entered the season on the fringe of the top-25 rankings, but the Big 12 leaders now find themselves firmly in the race to earn one of the top-8 national seeds in the NCAA Tournament. Ludy fittingly became the first college baseball player to participate in a Skype video interview with College Baseball 360 (links below, followed by more bio. info). Why Mike Leach's 64-Team Playoff Is An Awful Idea

I like Mike Leach. Really, I do.

I admire what he was able to accomplish at Texas Tech (I mean, who else could turn that program into a national title contender?). I am awed by his offensive genius. I love I like the way he fought back when ESPN effectively tried to end his career. I like his outspoken nature. I even find that whole pirate thing entertaining.

On The Agenda: Playoff Talk

Next week, by all indications, college football will take one step closer to the adoption of a playoff system.

On Tuesday, BCS executive director Bill Hancock told the Associated Press that the details of a proposed playoff system will be discussed when conference commissioners meet next week in Florida. And though Hancock was quick to point out that nothing "final" will emerge from the meeting, and though he added that it's no slam-dunk that a playoff will ultimately be implemented, the mere fact that he is openly admitting that the idea marks a change from years' past, when the powers-that-be in college football seemed unwilling to even consider the idea.

Poll: Support Remains Strong for Paterno in Pennyslvania

Here's the thing about the Joe Paterno/Jerry Sandusky/Penn State sex abuse scandal: It's not going away. Not anytime soon. And especially not up in Happy Valley.

Whether it's because of ill-timed press releases from the Penn State board of trustees or the ongoing investigation into what happened (or didn't) in State College or the latest developments from the Sandusky trial itself, this is a story that remains very much in the news. And the controversy surrounding Paterno's somewhat Shakespearean end? Well, that lingers on, too--because it seems people just can't stop talking about it.

Another SEC Team Sits At The Top… TUCSON, Ariz. ? Louisiana St. (30-7) has been ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA Division I baseball poll by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. Why Mike Leach's 64-Team Playoff Is An Awful Idea

I like Mike Leach. Really, I do.

I admire what he was able to accomplish at Texas Tech (I mean, who else could turn that program into a national title contender?). I am awed by his offensive genius. The Stories of the Year? Penn State's Rebuild, College Football's Playoff March

College Baseball By The Numbers Notebook ? April 16

A Look At The Latest Week’s Action… Another wild weekend of college baseball is in the books. The weekend started with seven CB360 Top 50 matchups going to extra innings on Friday and ended with a total of 13 series sweeps (41 total Top 50 series). An interesting MLB milestone with a college connection was reached Sunday when the Arizona Diamondbacks? John McDonald collected his 500th career hit. McDonald is the last former Providence College player still active in the Major Leagues. Providence cut its baseball program after the 1999. 1,444?Career wins for Stanford head coach Mark Marquess with Sunday?s 4-2 victory over Oregon. The victory ties him with long time Virginia Tech coach Chuck Hartman (1960-2006) for No. 5 all-time among Division-I coaches.   600?Career Division One victories for Oregon head coach George Horton after Saturday?s 5-0 series clinching win at Stanford. The win not only gave Horton the milestone, it also gave the Ducks their fourth straight Pac-12 Conference series victory and moved them into a tie with Arizona atop the conference standings.   7?RBIs [...]

NCAA Denies Georgia Tech Appeal

So it's official: Georgia Tech did not actually win the 2009 ACC Championship.

Because the NCAA says so.

On Friday, college football's oft-bewildering ruling body denied Tech's appeal of the penalties it had been handed for playing an ineligible player--wideout Demaryius Thomas--during the 2009 season. Those penalties included a fine, recruiting restrictions, four years' probation and loss of that '09 conference title.
