Music City Miracle Part Two Crushes Tennessee as North Carolina Triumphs

NASHVILLE -- This time the Tennessee team lost in the Music City Miracle, Part Two.

In an end of game scenario that will be dissected as closely as the second day of the battle of Gettysburg, Derek Dooley, the unluckiest head coach in college football history, managed to lose another game after he'd already won it.

And this one hurt even more. Cut deeper. Left Volunteer fans staring forlornly at the heavens wondering what in the world the fan base has done for karma to so completely desert the program. As Tennessee fans rained down bottles and other paraphernalia on the officials leaving the field, North Carolina's coaching staff exploded out of the coaches booth screaming along in tune to Rocky Top: "Sloppy Top, Sloppy Top, you'll always be a**holes to me!"

The loss left Dooley nearly speechless. "Well," he said, pausing for a moment, "I thought I'd seen it all in Baton Rouge."

So did Tennessee Vol fans who'd watched Tennessee lose to LSU on a final untimed down after being flagged with 13 men on the field. Once more Dooley's Tennessee Volunteer football team snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. With 31 seconds remaining and no timeouts left, North Carolina took possession of the football at its own 20, trailing 20-17. The Tar Heels were still in the game because Daniel Lincoln, the Vols senior kicker, had his extra point blocked after a go-ahead touchdown by Tennessee.

Marcus Lattimore Making a Difference at South Carolina for Steve Spurrier

ATLANTA -- Steve Spurrier has always lived by the forward pass. It's been his identity, even more than his trademark visor.

After all, Spurrier was first a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at Florida. Later as the Gators' coach, he used a wide-open passing attack to win a national title, play for another and claim six SEC championships.

But Spurrier had limited success at South Carolina in his return to college coaching until he found a running back - not a quarterback - he could count on.

Meet Marcus Lattimore, the savior for the Old Ball Coach and the Gamecocks.

Not since Herschel Walker has a freshman runner arguably made a bigger impact in the SEC than Lattimore, who was convinced to stay in-state and turned around South Carolina's football fortunes in Spurrier's sixth season.

Paterno Wants to Return in 2011. But Does Penn State Want Him Back?

And so the Joe Paterno era will apparently continue at Penn State.

At least, it will continue so long as Paterno gets his way.

Rumors have been swirling for weeks now that Paterno would (finally) step down after his Nittany Lions' Jan. 1 Outback Bowl showdown with Florida. But in a news conference on Tuesday, the ever-stubborn Paterno told reporters had yet to even consider retirement. He said he has every intention of returning to the sidelines next season.

Kansas State, Baylor on Downward Spiral With Big 12 Looming

It's been a rough couple of weeks for Big 12 stalwarts Kansas State and Baylor, and their struggles were reflected in the latest polls Monday.

The Wildcats, who began the year as a consensus top-three team and as the favorites to unseat Kansas in the Big 12 standings, dropped out of the AP Top 25 on Monday while they managed to hold on at No.23 in the USA Today Coaches' poll. Kansas State (10-3) lost last week to UNLV, 63-59, in a virtual home game at the Sprint Center in Kansas City while both guard Jacob Pullen and forward Curtis Kelly -- the two senior leaders -- sat out on suspension for receiving impermissible benefits.

Pullen, who began the year as a national player of the year candidate, will return to action next week after sitting out an NCAA mandated three games for receiving clothes at a Manhattan Mall department store at an impermissible discount. Kelly remains under indefinite suspension for also receiving the discount but the length of his suspension is still under review while the school figures out the exact dollar amount.

K-State sports information director Tom Gilbert told FanHouse on Monday that the holiday season has likely slowed down a decision on Kelly but that determination could be made in the next few days.

With Haywood Hire, Pitt's Pederson Puts His Job on the Line

It's as simple as this for Steve Pederson: His job is on the line. And Mike Haywood is the only guy who can save it.

Pederson, the athletic director at the University of Pittsburgh, has reportedly hired Haywood to take over the enduringly average Panther football program (a press conference is scheduled for Thursday). And while Haywood certainly has some promise--he just led Miami of Ohio to a MAC championship, one year after seeing that same team finish 1-11--his hire is not exactly being celebrated by Panther fans, who expected much, much more in the wake of the firing of Dave Wannstedt.

Winning Streak on Line, UConn Steels for Fight at Stanford

If the pressure is all on top-ranked UConn in Thursday night's spotlight matchup with No. 9 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., someone should tell the Huskies.

The team with the 90-game winning streak, placing it on the line in a big way against a big, deep, experienced Cardinal team that just put a 37-point licking on the No. 4 team in the nation, doesn't deal much with pressure.

Not when they tied and broke the NCAA Division I winning streak in the days before Christmas. Not now.

Jeremy Hazell Describes Moment of Gunshot Wound

Filed under:

It's always better to keep things in perspective.

Jeremy Hazell, a 6-foot-5 senior guard for the Seton Hall basketball team, knows that best now.

"I just feel very lucky, very blessed," Hazell said in an exclusive interview with the New York Daily News on Monday, after surviving a gun-shot wound while walking back from a Christmas party early Sunday in east Harlem.

"I didn't know these guys -- never saw them before," Hazell said. "They just tried to rob me. I never knew something like this could happen to me."

After undergoing surgery for a broken scaphoid bone in his left wrist Dec.2, the NBA hopeful could have been lost for his final NCAA season.

On Christmas night, Hazell could have lost his life.

NCAA Bungles Ohio State Ruling Along With Entirety of 2010's Rulings

In past years, I've analogized the NCAA's enforcement arm to a traffic cop. I hate, hate, hate traffic cops. So do you. Why? Because they sit on the side of the road and watch everyone speed by. Occasionally they pull out into traffic, pull over a speeder and write him or her a ticket. While the traffic cop is writing you the ticket, everyone continues to speed past you as you sit on the side of the road. Nothing changes. Any attempt to regulate traffic speeds is impossible. It's a stupid, ineffective and inconsistent, just like the NCAA.

In the wake of NCAA's ruling on Ohio State's five football players, including Terrelle Pryor, who all acknowledged selling jerseys, rings or gold pants, I believe I've been too generous to the NCAA. This has been the year when the NCAA has stopped being a traffic cop and turned into an arbitrary and capricious dictator. Think an insane Saddam Hussein at the height of his powers in Iraq. The NCAA is a totalitarian dictator, the rules are what the NCAA says the rules are. Even if, you know, honest logic dies in the process.

Put simply, the decision to allow Ohio State's five "suspended" players to remain eligible for the Sugar Bowl is indefensible. Completely and utterly indefensible. I'll write more about this shortly, but how can you have a suspension that doesn't take effect immediately? How can you be eligible at the same time that you're ineligible? How can a window of eligibility exist if you are presently ineligible? What's more, and there will be more on this shortly, how come Ohio State's 2009 and 2010 seasons aren't invalidated for ineligible players competing?

Maryland's Brenda Frese, Family Tackle Son's Leukemia Head-On

Brenda Frese BALTIMORE -- Four months from now, Brenda Frese would relish the chance to devise a game plan for her Maryland team to bring the Connecticut women's basketball team's vaunted Division I record winning streak to an end, if it hasn't ended by then.

But on a chilly Wednesday morning -- the day after the Huskies won their 89th straight game to pass the UCLA men's team of the 1970s -- Frese's most intricate strategy of the day was getting her 2-year-old son, Tyler Thomas, quiet enough to get attached to an intravenous tube in an examination room of the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology Center.

A container of cereal proved to do the trick for Tyler to settle in to accept the chemotherapy that helps him battle the leukemia running through his little body.

Frese's Terps, off to a 10-1 start, have the mix of talented veterans and the No. 2 freshman class to play deep into March. At moments like these, though, where her son's life hangs in the balance, Frese can be forgiven for placing basketball off to the side.

"We all can get tunnel vision in our day-to-day, our work, our jobs," Frese said. "There's such a bigger meaning and so many other things going on. I'm constantly reminded of that when I walk in here and see so many sick people with worse situations than our own. You get the perspective of not taking any single day for granted."

"Our win is about beating leukemia."

Tyler has come a long way -- figuratively and literally -- since Sept. 28, when, in a whirlwind five hours, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a form of cancer where the body produces an abnormally large number of white blood cells.

Jay Finley Sees Baylor Turnaround Come to Fruition in Texas Bowl

Jay FinleyHOUSTON -- There were a lot sales pitches and challenges thrown at Jay Finley six years ago as he weighed his college football options as a senior at Corsicana (Texas) High School.

The challenge that resonated most came from Baylor and it was both simple and daunting at the same time: "The one thing you can do is you can help turn this program around."

Most questioned Finley's sanity then, but five seasons and some nagging injuries later the senior running back has been a catalyst in one of the most remarkable transformations in college football. The Bears are set to embark on their first bowl appearance since 1994 when they take on Illinois in the Texas Bowl on Wednesday evening at Reliant Stadium.

The recruiters' challenge is weighing heavily on Finley as he prepares to don a Baylor jersey one last time.

"That was one of the catches they had that brought me here," Finley said to FanHouse. "That's what I wanted to do. Me being a senior and helping lead this team to a bowl game, this is something I am always going to remember."

It's been probably one of the wildest rides imaginable as the perennial cellar dwellers of the Big 12 South finally turned the tables in Art Briles' third year on the job. The Bears accomplished firsts like sitting atop the Big 12 South for a week, while also realizing some rare highs like breaking into the Top 25 and going into Austin and beating the Texas Longhorns.

Renardo Sidney, Elgin Bailey, Mississippi State Teammates, Fight in Stands

Filed under:

Just before a second round game of the Diamond Head Classic -- a game that featured Hawai'i and Utah -- on Thursday night, a pair of Mississippi State basketball players were involved in a fight in the stands that resulted in both Elgin Bailey and Renardo Sidney throwing punches at one another before the altercation was broken up by teammates. Sidney was escorted out of the arena by ushers, though police said neither of the players were arrested.

Sidney has appeared in just two games this season for the Bulldogs and has averaged 15.5 points per game. He sat out all of last season while awaiting clearance from the NCAA.

Bailey, a 6-foot-8 forward, has appeared in 12 games and averaged 6.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Earlier in the week, the junior was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. Mississippi State is one of eight teams competing in the tournament, and has posted a 1-1 mark in the event, losing to Washington State on Wednesday and defeating the University of San Diego by a 69-52 margin on Thursday.

Doron Lamb Scores 32 Points, Sets UK Freshman Record in Win

Doron LambDoron Lamb scored 32 points off 11-of-12 shooting -- including seven 3-pointers -- in No. 13 Kentucky's 89-52 rout of Winthrop on Wednesday. It set a record for points in a game by a freshman, which was previously held by Jamal Mashburn, who had 31 in a game against Georgia.

Given the past success of the University of Kentucky basketball program and the recent influx of young talent, setting this record is quite an accomplishment. And, as a testament to John Calipari's recruiting success, it was his third-best freshman who did it -- a guy he brings off the bench.

Lamb was hot from the start, hitting five threes in the first half. He was forced into the lineup early after starting point guard and fellow freshman Brandon Knight injured his knee. Knight would return, and Lamb would keep hitting. He set the record on a streaking layup after receiving a bullet pass from DeAndre Liggins.

A year ago, when Kentucky was led by freshmen Eric Bledsoe, John Wall, and DeMarcus Cousins, the highest point output by a first-year player came from Bledsoe when he scored 29 against East Tennessee State in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Lamb's previous high this season came at North Carolina when he had 24 points.

Kentucky is now 9-2 and will face Coppin State next Tuesday.

Florida International's First Bowl Trip Is Suspenseful and Successful

DETROIT (AP) -- Jacob Younger caught the pass near midfield, flipped the ball to his team's top player and hoped for the best.

T.Y. Hilton took the lateral and dashed toward the sideline, trying to reach the first-down marker and keep Florida International's final drive alive.

"Obviously we thought he didn't get it," Toledo coach Tim Beckman said. "But it's not my call to make."

The officials ruled Hilton reached the marker before stepping out of bounds, giving FIU an improbable conversion on fourth-and-17. Moments later, Jack Griffin's 34-yard field goal as time ran out gave the Golden Panthers a delirious 34-32 victory Sunday night in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

McMurphy's Picks: More Holiday Cheer and Bowl Picks

Let's quickly recap the past few weeks for the Big Ten: Iowa has a player arrested for running a drug house and school officials admit some Hawkeyes likely got around the school's drug-testing policies.

Then on Thursday, six Ohio State players were suspended for selling more gear than a pawn shop. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor and running back Dan Herron were among the players suspended, starting next season. They also must repay money and benefits ranging in value from $1,000 to $2,500.

The school announced the repayments must be made to a charity. How about: "Little Sisters of the Poor?" I'm sure Ohio State president Gordon Gee would approve.

With all of the fine and upstanding student-athletes in the Big Ten, call me crazy, but I think Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany needs to reconsider and should keep the division names as "Legends" and "Leaders."

Despite the Ohio State suspensions, they will be allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl. While the Sugar Bowl is still more than a week away, here are this week's bowl selections (how's that for a transitional paragraph).

Reminder: Before the season, I was staked an imaginary $5,000 bankroll. Each week, "Cover Me" - at least that's the name tattooed on his arm - and I made our college football selections. We finished 20 games over .500 for an imaginary $1,050 profit.

For the bowl season, we decided to combine forces. We will pick each and every one of the 35 bowl games. In some bowls, we'll even provide our over/under selection. And as a special holiday treat, we've rated our picks from 1-to-4 stars with the 4-star, in theory, being the stronger pick. Point spreads from Wednesday's USA Today.

Enes Kanter Would Play Sophomore Year if Ruled Eligible

Filed under:

Enes KanterEnes Kanter may not be able to suit up for Kentucky this season, but next season is reportedly still a possibility.

Kanter's father said that if the NCAA were to grant his son a sophomore season, he would spend it in Lexington rather than turning pro, according to Mike DeCourcy. Kanter was initially ruled ineligible for accepting monetary benefits that exceeded those deemed "necessary" when he played professionally in his native Turkey.

"Enes would do anything to play and help UK, his teammates and fans," Mehmet Kanter wrote. "In the last two years, one thing me and Enes never discussed was him being pro. He didn't mention to me about NBA or draft and I guarantee you as a father -- if that's the NCAA's decision Enes will be a sophomore next year (at) UK."

Kentucky has resubmitted its case to the NCAA in light of the organization's findings regarding Auburn QB Cam Newton and his father's involvement in a pay-for-play scheme with Mississippi State. Kanter's father, Mehmet, spoke to that point as well.

"I been saying from beginning of the review there has never been any monetary exchange between Enes and Fenerbahce (a Turkish club team)," the elder Kanter said. "Enes was 16 years old, never had any knowledge about any accounts and everything has been between me and Fenerbahce."

The NCAA has yet to rule on the appeal and there is no timetable.

Steve Addazio Reportedly to be Next Temple Coach

Steve AddazioSteve Addazio was the interim head coach at Florida less than a year ago. He's now going to be the next coach at Temple University, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Addazio, 51, was the offensive coordinator at Florida for the past two seasons and had been a member of Urban Meyer's staff since 2005. He served as the interim coach in the Sugar Bowl, when Meyer was on a leave of absence. When Meyer resigned this time around, he was replaced by Will Muschamp, who decided to hire a new offensive staff.

Addazio also served as Indiana's offensive coordinator for three seasons and has been an assistant coach at Syracuse and Notre Dame.

The Temple job would be his first full-time head coaching job.

Al Golden, who had coached Temple for five seasons and rescued the Owls from the depths of embarrassment, took the Miami job Dec. 12.

Temple finished 8-4 in 2010, and was the only bowl-eligible team with a winning record to not receive a postseason invite.

The Big Ten's Big Mistake: 'Legends & Leaders'

Sometimes, really smart people make really not-so-smart decisions.

And Jim Delany, the super-smart commissioner of the Big Ten conference, has just offered us more proof of exactly that.

On Monday, Delany made the much-anticipated announcement of his league's new division names--division names made necessary, of course, by the pending addition of Nebraska for the 2011 football season. The names were announced with much fanfare (on the Big Ten Network, of course). But just as pretty much everyone in College Football Nation praised the addition of Nebraska as a stroke of genius on the part of Delany, so, too, is there consensus that these new division names--the "Legends" division and the "Leaders" division--are utterly ridiculous.

Van Hatchell More Than Just Sylvia's Son at North Carolina

He was on a first-name basis only with many fellow students during his freshman year at the University of North Carolina. He also had a standard response for those who quizzed him about his parents, specifically his mother. He simply offered she worked in the school's athletic department, quickly changing the subject while figuring not many would press him for a more detailed explanation.

Four years later and a senior walk-on on the North Carolina men's basketball team, Van Hatchell still has some explaining to do.

"I have people coming up to me even now saying they never knew who my mom was," the good-natured Hatchell said and laughed.

"They will ask, 'Why didn't you tell me?' I just didn't bring it up, that's all. I would never tell anyone who my mom was just because I didn't want people to like me because of that or think I was here because of her."

Hatchell's mother, if you haven't guessed, is Sylvia Hatchell.

She's the coach of UNC's women's basketball team, the first and only coach to lead teams to national championships at the AIAW, NAIA and NCAA levels. Since arriving at UNC in 1986, Hatchell has directed the Tar Heels to one national title (1994), eight ACC titles and six 30-win seasons.

Here's video of the fight...

Navy Quarterback Ricky Dobbs Conquers Adversity With His Faith

Filed under:

Ricky Dobbs

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - As Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo approached the visiting locker room at SMU's Gerald Ford Stadium on Oct. 17, 2009, his mind raced. He didn't know exactly what he would say to quarterback Ricky Dobbs, only that it wasn't going to be very pleasant.

Niumatalolo had just witnessed perhaps the worst first half of Dobbs' career. Navy's star quarterback - the same quarterback who would later break Tim Tebow's NCAA touchdown record - had done nothing but fumble, bumble and stumble through a forgettable first half against SMU. Dobbs lost two fumbles with the Mustangs returning one for a 1-yard touchdown en route to a 21-7 halftime lead.

Niumatalolo entered the locker room and stormed over to Dobbs' locker. But just as Mount Niumatalolo was about to erupt, he noticed Dobbs reading. Niumatalolo looked closer. Dobbs was reading his New International Version Bible.

"I'm getting ready to yell at him, I look down at him and he's reading the Bible," Niumatalolo told FanHouse. "It's hard to yell at someone when they're reading the Bible. I just said, 'Ricky, try your best and hold onto the ball' and kind of walked away."

It wasn't the first - or last - time Dobbs left someone speechless.

"At halftime I knew I needed strength to continue," Dobbs said. "I didn't know how I was going to finish that game. My (right) knee was throbbing and very painful."

So Dobbs looked through his Bible, searching for inspiration. Looking for strength. He found it in Isaiah 41:9-14, Verse 10.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Louisville Makes Strong Statement in Beef O'Brady's Bowl Victory

Charlie StrongST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The frequency of Charlie Strong's message varies depending on who you ask. Some say they hear it almost daily, others contend it's only weekly. While there might be some disagreement on how often it's delivered, there's no debating Strong's message.

"We've got to play our balls off."

Back in May when Strong had yet to coach his first game at Louisville, he promised a group of boosters his team would play hard, would be intense and would never quit.

And that, oh yeah, he added: "we've got to play our balls off."

That's exactly what the Cardinals did Tuesday night, rallying from a two-touchdown deficit to defeat Southern Miss, 31-28, in the Beef O'Brady's St. Petersburg Bowl at Tropicana Field.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Zeke Walters' 8-yard touchdown reception from Austin Davis gave the Golden Eagles a 28-21 lead. USM had dominated the game statistically to that point and now clearly had regained momentum.

That lasted exactly 15 seconds.

NCAA Looks At Changing College Baseball Tournament Format

There’s a chance the NCAA College Baseball Tournament could have a different look in the future. At its recent meeting, the NCAA Division One Baseball Committee discussed two possible new formats. The current format starts with 16 four-team regionals conducted in double-elimination format. The winners then advance to eight super regionals with the winners advancing [...]

Boise State Broncos vs. Utah Utes: MAACO Bowl Las Vegas

Chris Petersen Kyle WhittinghamBoise State and Utah certainly had higher hopes for their respective seasons a few months ago. At one point, both were ranked as top-six teams in the nation. The Utes began 8-0 while the Broncos began 10-0.

Instead, they square off Dec. 22 in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

No. 20 Utah was blasted by TCU and then pretty well dominated by Notre Dame. The Utes squeaked out wins over San Diego State and rival BYU to close the season 10-2.

No. 10 Boise State lost a heartbreaker to then-No. 19 Nevada before responding to throttle Utah State and finish 11-1.

The Broncos are led by Heisman Trophy finalist Kellen Moore, who was second nationally in passing efficiency rating. He threw for 3,506 and 33 touchdowns while completing 71 percent of his passes and throwing just five picks. Titus Young and Austin Pettis are the prolific receivers while Doug Martin gives the offense balance as a 1,000-yard rusher.

The team is balanced as well, as Boise State yields just 259.3 yards and 13.6 points per contest -- both good enough for fourth in FBS.
