Kansas State, Baylor on Downward Spiral With Big 12 Looming

It's been a rough couple of weeks for Big 12 stalwarts Kansas State and Baylor, and their struggles were reflected in the latest polls Monday.

The Wildcats, who began the year as a consensus top-three team and as the favorites to unseat Kansas in the Big 12 standings, dropped out of the AP Top 25 on Monday while they managed to hold on at No.23 in the USA Today Coaches' poll. Kansas State (10-3) lost last week to UNLV, 63-59, in a virtual home game at the Sprint Center in Kansas City while both guard Jacob Pullen and forward Curtis Kelly -- the two senior leaders -- sat out on suspension for receiving impermissible benefits.

Pullen, who began the year as a national player of the year candidate, will return to action next week after sitting out an NCAA mandated three games for receiving clothes at a Manhattan Mall department store at an impermissible discount. Kelly remains under indefinite suspension for also receiving the discount but the length of his suspension is still under review while the school figures out the exact dollar amount.

K-State sports information director Tom Gilbert told FanHouse on Monday that the holiday season has likely slowed down a decision on Kelly but that determination could be made in the next few days.
