Wesley Witherspoon Out Five Weeks After Knee Surgery

Wesley Witherspoon, Memphis' leading scorer, will be sidelined five weeks following knee surgery. Memphis coach Josh Pastner said that the procedure will take place Friday.

Given the preliminary timetable, Witherspoon will return Jan. 15 against Marshall. In that time he will miss eight games, including a home game with No.9 Georgetown and the Tigers' annual matchup with No. 11 Tennessee.

The injury occurred in a Nov.r 17 game with Northwestern State. He continued to play in subsequent games, but Pastner reduced his practice time.

After Memphis's first loss of the season to Kansas Tuesday night -- Witherspoon had only eight points -- he made a Twitter-guarantee that he would work harder than any player for the remainder of the season. In the coming weeks, at least, that will be in rehabilitation.

Memphis will look to freshman Will Barton to pick up the scoring slack. Barton had 16 in Tuesday's loss to the Jayhawks.

Witherspoon is averaging 13 points a game and shooting 58 percent from three for the No. 13 Tigers.
