Doron Lamb Scores 32 Points, Sets UK Freshman Record in Win

Doron LambDoron Lamb scored 32 points off 11-of-12 shooting -- including seven 3-pointers -- in No. 13 Kentucky's 89-52 rout of Winthrop on Wednesday. It set a record for points in a game by a freshman, which was previously held by Jamal Mashburn, who had 31 in a game against Georgia.

Given the past success of the University of Kentucky basketball program and the recent influx of young talent, setting this record is quite an accomplishment. And, as a testament to John Calipari's recruiting success, it was his third-best freshman who did it -- a guy he brings off the bench.

Lamb was hot from the start, hitting five threes in the first half. He was forced into the lineup early after starting point guard and fellow freshman Brandon Knight injured his knee. Knight would return, and Lamb would keep hitting. He set the record on a streaking layup after receiving a bullet pass from DeAndre Liggins.

A year ago, when Kentucky was led by freshmen Eric Bledsoe, John Wall, and DeMarcus Cousins, the highest point output by a first-year player came from Bledsoe when he scored 29 against East Tennessee State in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Lamb's previous high this season came at North Carolina when he had 24 points.

Kentucky is now 9-2 and will face Coppin State next Tuesday.
