More 2012 Season Previews: Ohio State, USC

Another day, another look ahead to the season to come in college football.

For the next few weeks, we're going to be taking a look at the teams that make up my (somewhat controversial) 2012 Preseason Top 25. Yesterday, we kicked off our previews with in-depth analyses of national title contenders LSU and Alabama, a Michigan team that has found new life under coach Brady Hoke and a Penn State team that is attempting to rebuild in the wake of an absolutely crushing scandal.

Why Mike Leach's 64-Team Playoff Is An Awful Idea

I like Mike Leach. Really, I do.

I admire what he was able to accomplish at Texas Tech (I mean, who else could turn that program into a national title contender?). I am awed by his offensive genius. I love I like the way he fought back when ESPN effectively tried to end his career. I like his outspoken nature. I even find that whole pirate thing entertaining.

Poll: Support Remains Strong for Paterno in Pennyslvania

Here's the thing about the Joe Paterno/Jerry Sandusky/Penn State sex abuse scandal: It's not going away. Not anytime soon. And especially not up in Happy Valley.

Whether it's because of ill-timed press releases from the Penn State board of trustees or the ongoing investigation into what happened (or didn't) in State College or the latest developments from the Sandusky trial itself, this is a story that remains very much in the news. And the controversy surrounding Paterno's somewhat Shakespearean end? Well, that lingers on, too--because it seems people just can't stop talking about it.

CB360 Composite Top-50 Update #7

The March 26 CNR Top-50, Presented ByDugouthats.com… With college baseball nearing its midpoint, the CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR) formula is on the verge of expanding … but for now the ingredients remain the same as earlier in the season ? and the top-5 teams are unchanged from a weak ago (Florida, Stanford, Arkansas, Florida State and North Carolina at 1-5). front-page photo courtesy of Purdue Two teams ? current #7 Texas A&M (up from #12) and #8 UCLA (formerly #11) ? have returned to the top-10, replacing Arizona (dropped from #7 to #13) and Rice (fell from #8 to #11). Despite suffering its first loss of the season, Kentucky moved up from #9 to #6 (maybe a delayed poll bump from some around the country?) while Miami slid up one spot to #9 and South Carolina (previously #6) now holds down the final spot in the top-10. It’s a bit early to begin looking too closely at RPI-type numbers (a lot can change during conference play), but the CNR will start incorporating those factors into next week’s top-50 update. The March 19 CNR Top-50, Presented ByDugouthats.com? COMPOSITE NATIONAL RANKINGS (CNR) CRITERIA:As the season progresses, CB360?s 100-point Composite National Rankings formula ultimately is centered around 15 core ingredients ? plus a bonus/penalty factor based on record over final-10 games. The CNR combines a diverse collection of ?experts? (ranging from coaches, various media, computer calculations and postseason projections) ? to help provide a preview of teams that could be in the running for the 2012 NCAA Championship field (hypothetically 50 teams, plus 14 others from lower-rated automatic-bid conferences). Teams receive points based on their standings in each poll/rating/projection (60 pts for #1; 59 for #2, etc.). For polls involving voting points (coaches and CB) and the various RPI-type ratings, the CNR adjusts to reward teams that have larger margins in the voting/point totals (whereas two teams with nearly the same voting-point total will be closer in the CNR allotment for that poll). Note that strength-of-schedule typically is factored into RPI formulations ? thus the actual SOS numbers are used only early in the season (SOS are not used in the CNR when RPI already are in the mix). For the NCAA field projections, teams are awarded CNR points based on their [...]

The Gators, ranked No. 1 six consecutive polls, have won a school-record 17 in a row. Over the past weekend, Florida swept a 3-game series against Vanderbilt. The Wildcats now own the third longest winning streak in Southeastern Conference history behind only the 23-game streak from 2010 NCAA champion LSU and the 22-game streak from South Carolina’s 2000 team. Kentucky is the only undefeated team in NCAA Division I baseball. After the impressive trio of wins, Kentucky jumped from 16th to second in the poll this week while South Carolina slipped to sixth. Arkansas and Texas Christian have each won 9 in a row while N.C. State has won 10 of its last 11. Four teams fell out of the poll, including Oklahoma (5 straight losses), Wake Forest (2-3 last week), California (0-4), and Texas Tech. (2-4). New to top [...]

College Baseball 360 Top-50 Update #6

What Has Happened to Randy Edsall?

I'm having a hard time remembering any coach more universally despised than Randy Edsall.

Edsall, who at one point was viewed as something of a savior during his mostly successful tenure at UConn, has not enjoyed quite the same warm-and-fuzzy reception down in College Park, Md. Indeed, it can justifiably be said that Edsall's stay with Maryland has thus far been nothing short of a disaster.

College Baseball 360 Week 5 Notebook

Latest Week Light On Upsets… It’s almost unbelievable, but the fifth full weekend of the college baseball season is in the books. Conference play is now under way in most of the warm weather conferences around the country. Underdogs took just six of 32 series of three games or more over the weekend, with two more series still to be decided on Monday. While March Madness has taken center stage over the last four days, college baseball got its first ESPN exposure over the weekend as well. Game one of the Virginia-Florida State series was on ESPNU and tonight’s series finale will be on the same channel. Virginia will try to salvage a game after losses in the first two games. Tonight’s first pitch is set for 7 p.m. Eastern. Here’s a look at more from the weekend… The Wild, Wild Wildcats… Who saw Kentucky coming? We?re not talking John Calipari?s Wildcat basketball team, we?re talking Gary Henderson?s baseball club ?the one that just took its SEC-opening series from two-time defending national champion South Carolina. Despite a run of 18 straight wins to open the season heading into the weekend?s series in Lexington against the Gamecocks, it was hard to [...]
