LeBron James Brings Heat to the Miami Hurricanes, Too

When LeBron James announced he was taking his talents to South Beach, it wasn't hard to guess the impact that would have on the Miami Heat -- the season-opener notwithstanding.

But who knew the trickle down would reach all the way to the University of Miami?

The Hurricanes are suddenly James' team, too. He has adopted the Atlantic Coast Conference bottom-dweller, playing pick-up games with players on campus and promising to make appearances at BankUnited Center this season. And the Canes apparently have adopted James as well. He shows up at least four times in various photos in the annual media guide, not including a full-page Nike ad.

In a town where the Canes reside a rung below the Heat in the sports consciousness and a mile behind the football program on their own campus, they can only hope that James will raise the profile of basketball for everyone.

"You have a guy like LeBron in town, it's definitely great for us as a program,'' Canes guard Malcolm Grant said during the ACC media day last week in Charlotte, N.C.

The campus was abuzz in August after James and his pals, including Heat players Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller and All-Star Hornets guard and close friend Chris Paul, came by to play a pick-up game. Canes coach Frank Haith said he was approached by representatives of James, who wanted to set up the scrimmages to prepare for training camp.
After his visit to campus on Aug. 26, James even tweeted about it.

"Just left 'The U' hooping with the team ...Great runs! Needed that"

It didn't hurt the 'Canes, either.

Billy Donovan, Gators Aren't Biting on Early Hype

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Gators are favorites to win the SEC men's basketball title for the first time since winning the national title in 2007. A panel of SEC and national media members picked the Gators to unseat Kentucky in balloting earlier this week.

That's reality.

UF coach Billy Donovan, however, has a different view. He wants to make sure perception and reality are not skewed. Sure, Donovan sees a team that went to the NCAA tournament last season and returns all five starters. He understands the fuss and why many believe the Gators should be really, really good. But Donovan also points out that UF needed a late run and three-game winning shots last season to help it advance into the Big Dance, where it tumbled in the opening round to BYU.

N.C. State Finds New Lowe With 'Pack of Freshman Talent

Sidney LoweFanHouse kicks off its preview of the top 30 teams today with No. 30: N.C. State. Check back every day for new teams until we crown our preseason favorite Nov. 15.

For a coach so firmly seated on the hotseat that the team bench may as well be made of charcoal briquettes, Sidney Lowe has developed an strange habit this preseason.

He's smiling.

A lot, according to his players.

"This year, he's changed," N.C. State power forward Tracy Smith said at last week's ACC Operation Basketball. He's letting us play. He's not whistling as much. ... I've seen a lot more smiles on his face."

If only he could convince Wolfpack fans to follow along.

Lowe is in his fifth year at N.C. State and has yet to appear in an NCAA tournament or finish higher than than ninth in the ACC. In fact, he may best be known nationally for his trademark red blazer, a loud number that looks like it was lifted from Santa Claus' realtor, as anything he's done on the court, at least since helping N.C. State to the 1983 national championship as a player.

Though he's proved better liked by his fans than predecessor Herb Sendek, the effective, but C-SPAN dull coach who preceded him, he's yet to reach the levels of success as Sendek's later years, which included five straight NCAA tournament appearances. At a school anxious to reclaim its spot as one of the ACC's Four Corners, rather than its donut-hole center, and with a new athletic director, there's no time like the present for Lowe.

Which leads us back to that peculiar smile.

"It's because we have a great team," Smith said, explaining his coach's new mannerism. "I'm back, [Javier] Gonzalez is back, the three freshmen are coming in. I think it will be hard to stop any of us."

For the first time in Lowe's tenure, the Wolfpack have enough talent to compete with upper echelon of the league. N.C. State was pegged to finish fourth by the league's media in the preseason, and the 'Pack brought in what will likely be the most impactful -- if not the most talented -- recruiting class in the ACC. Three five-star freshmen, point guard Ryan Harrow, shooting guard Lorenzo Brown and small forward C.J. Leslie, join a team that was, at least for one night, good enough to beat national champion Duke last season.

"I like where we are," Lowe said. "I like our team and the effort we have."

All that talent should mean the Wolfpack will get good in a hurry.

Literally.

Baylor's Scott Drew Doesn't Have Much To Say About Troubles

KANSAS CITY -- Just a few months ago, Baylor and head coach Scott Drew were riding a wave of incredible highs.

The program was coming off its first NCAA tournament win in nearly 60 years as it rolled to the Elite Eight of the tournament for the first time in the modern era. Recruits were paying attention.

But with the basketball season just weeks ago, the news out of the Bears camp hasn't been as positive. First, star guard LaceDarius Dunn was temporarily suspended from the team and school after allegedly punching his girlfriend. Then last week FOXsports.com reported that the program heading for an NCAA investigation because of alleged recruiting violations in connection to text messages to 6-foot-9 Colombian Hanner Perea.

Drew declined to talk much about the controversies surrounding his program during Thursday's Big 12 men's basketball media day at the Sprint Center. The NCAA does not confirm or deny its investigations.

"I have to decline comment, sorry," Drew said when asked by FanHouse to confirm whether or not his program is under NCAA investigation or if he has been notified of an impending probe. "That's the schools policy on anything like that, we just decline comment."

Three Things To Watch: Week 8

Wisconsin's moment has arrived.

Will they seize it?

One week ago, Bret Bielema's Badgers stunned the college football world--and the entire state of Ohio--by throttling the then-No.1-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes up in Madison. The 31-18 win saw Wisconsin excel in all phases of the game: They battered the Bucks with their rushing game; they held Terrelle Pryor in check with their smart, disciplined defense; they even got a big play out of their special teams.

Kyle Singler Headlines FanHouse's Preseason Basketball All-America Team

Filed under:

By the time he finished his junior year at Duke, Kyle Singler already had more hardware to his name than your local Home Depot.

National champion. Final Four Most Outstanding Player. ACC tournament MVP. Three-time All-ACC selection. So, when Singler finished celebrating Duke's fourth national championship, the relative graybeard of college basketball had an all-expenses-paid trip to the first round of the NBA draft.

But a funny thing happened on the way to a flush bank account and an NBA entourage. Singler opted to return to Duke.

"I had two great options in front of me," he said, when announcing in April that he wouldn't pursue the NBA draft , "but I did not want to miss out on all of the great things to come in a senior season."

So, instead of living an NBA lottery pick life and buying a home with more bathrooms than he has teammates, Singler spent the offseason collecting frequent flier miles, traveling from camp to camp and practicing against Team USA. All along Singler said he looked forward to a promising senior season and a team that seems more than just a year removed from the 2010 version, a squad that began the year facing questions of whether Duke was still truly relevant in college basketball.

"This team has a glow about it," Singler said at the ACC's preseason media day last week.

Duke is unquestionably back on top, as the latest national championship banner in Cameron Indoor Stadium and its newest crop of stars -- headed by point guard Kyrie Irving and transfer Seth Curry -- more than hint at.

So too is Duke's star junior.

Singler is FanHouse's preseason player of the year, by an overwhelming vote of our staff of college basketball writers and editors.

The Medford, Ore., native averaged 17.7 points per game last year and will likely see that number go up as Duke increases its tempo for the 2011 season. A rugged and unshakable forward, Singler, along with fellow captain Nolan Smith, provide the backbone for what is Mike Krzyzewski's most talented team since at least 2002, and perhaps since 1999.

All of which means Singler's senior year should be every bit the magical season he expects, and every reason to look into more storage space for all that hardware.

On The Road Again: Taylor Martinez, Nebraska Crush Cowboys

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Finally, with less than a minute remaining, Oklahoma State's defense discovered a play from Nebraska's offense it could stop as quarterback Taylor Martinez simply took the snap and went down to a knee.

It was one of the few times that Martinez didn't either blow past the Cowboys, bounce off a couple of tacklers or drop back and zip in one of his career-high 23 completions.

Coming off one of its most devastating losses in school history, Nebraska bounced back nicely thanks to its Magic Man -- Taylor "T-Magic" Martinez -- in the Cornhuskers' 51-41 dismantling of the Cowboys on Saturday afternoon.

Last week, Martinez watched the final seconds of Nebraska's 20-13 loss to Texas from the bench. He was pulled in the second half, a move NU coach Bo Pelini says he now regrets. However, Martinez spent the final seconds of Saturday's game at Boone Pickens Stadium on the field, taking two snaps and kneeling down as the clock ran out on the Cowboys.

Martinez, known more for his running than his throwing, was Kellen Moore-esque. Martinez completed 23 of 35 for 323 yards and five touchdowns. The five TD passes were the most by a Nebraska freshman and second only to Eric Crouch's school record.

Before Saturday, Martinez had never thrown for more than 150 yards in a game, but he passed that mark early in the third quarter.

Robbie Hummel Reportedly Will Return to Purdue in 2011-12

Robbie Hummel to return to Purdue for fifth season medical redshirtRobbie Hummel lost what was supposed to be his senior year on the first day of practice this past Saturday. His Purdue career, however, is not over, according to a report in the Lafayette Journal and Courier.

Hummel will opt to have surgery on his torn ACL over Thanksgiving weekend, so it doesn't conflict with his classes, and then plans to return to the Boilermakers for a fifth season, after getting a medical redshirt for this coming season. His father told the Journal and Courier that Hummel plans to announce Wednesday he will make this decision.

The 6-foot-8 senior is on schedule to graduate, but it's possible he enrolls in graduate school during his fifth year in West Lafayette.

Hummel would still miss the chance to see the Boilermakers' long-planned dream season with fellow senior stars JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore, but his return to the Boilers for a fifth season would leave Purdue quite the strong team for next season -- assuming he can stay healthy.

Hummel averaged 15.7 points and 6.9 rebounds a game last season and is generally regarded as one of the best players in the nation.

Out With Old, in With New as Mizzou Topples Faux-No. 1 Oklahoma

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Dustin Moyer saw it coming. The Missouri campus cop asked Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel a couple weeks ago how he would like to be escorted from the field safely after the Tigers beat Oklahoma, and fans went nuts.

Pinkel smiled. Missouri doesn't beat Oklahoma. Missouri doesn't win big games. But the Tigers, ranked No. 11 in the initial BCS standings for the season, did go on to beat No. 1 Oklahoma Saturday 36-27, and when it was over the crowd did rush the field in a frenzy it isn't used to.

And there was Moyer standing next to Pinkel.

How did you get him off safely?

"You know what a fullback does?'' Moyer said, letting a little grin slip through a serious look. "Let's just say I'm glad I've been working out the past couple years.''

Big showoff. Moyer was named People Magazine's Sexiest Dad Alive in 2009.

Anyway, what a moment Saturday was for Missouri. Actually, I saw the same moment last week at Wisconsin, when the Badgers beat then-No. 1 Ohio State, and the P.A. announcer begged fans to go back into the stands. A week earlier, South Carolina had the moment, beating No. 1 Alabama.

ACC Undeterred Despite Early Disrespect

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Atlantic Coast Conference overcame its history of mediocrity in football just long enough to place five teams in this year's preseason polls. That was until they started playing real games and the freefall began.

Looking back, it's hard not to laugh, isn't it?

And now this year's preseason basketball rankings, which are beginning to trickle out in magazines and online, are proving equally baffling. But for the opposite reason. The ACC is likely to feature no more than three or four teams in the top 25. The Big Ten, by comparison, might wind up with three teams in the top five at the start.

So the ACC's supposed powerhouse basketball programs have less depth than football? It can't be that much of an off-year for a conference that has produced the last two national champions, can it?

"We're a conference that has won a lot, five national championships in the last 10 years, three in the last six,'' Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said Wednesday at the annual ACC media day, dismissing the early rankings. "I think we're gonna be good.''

Baylor Beats Kansas State to Become Bowl Eligible for First Time Since 1995

Baylor football Robert GriffinBaylor football has endured quite the dry spell. The Bears haven't been to a bowl game since 1994 and haven't won more than five games since 1995 when the Bears went 7-4 but didn't go to a bowl. After a 47-42 victory on Saturday over Kansas State, however, the Bears are bowl eligible -- and it's not even November yet.

Baylor (6-2, 3-1 in Big 12 play) got a huge game from sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin (right). He completed 26 of 38 passes for 404 yards and four touchdowns. He wasn't the only offensive star for the Bears, however, as they piled up 679 yards in total offense.

Josh Gordon caught seven passes for 141 yards and two scores. Kendall Wright hauled in six passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Perhaps the biggest standout of the game was senior running back Jay Finley. He had only put together four 100-yard games in his career prior tbefore last week, with the high total being 121 yards in a game. Last week against Colorado, however, Finley put together a career game with 14 carries for 143 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Apparently he was only finding his groove, though, because Finley shattered his previous career-high with a whopping 246 yards on 26 carries. He found the end zone twice.

Baylor will look to keep things rolling next week in Austin, Tex,. where the Longhorns have now lost two consecutive games. The Bears last bowl game was a 10-3 loss to Washington State in the 1994 Alamo Bowl.

Kansas State (5-2, 2-2) will host No. 17 Oklahoma State.

Utah's Transition to the Pac-12 Conference Starting to Feel Real

Utah's transition to becoming a Pac-12 team is becoming a little more real for athletic director Chris Hill.

On Thursday, the conference announced that Utah would play in the South Division with UCLA, Southern California, Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado marking the most substantial announcement the conference has made involving Utah since the Utes officially joined on June 17.

"It feels more real than it has," Hill said. "Now there are some specifics. We know our exact schedules are going to come out and all of those things make it more tangible. The excitement grows for me every time there's an announcement of some kind that's tangible, that makes us understand this is a huge change."

Utah will play the five teams in its division annually and play four of the six remaining schools on a rotating basis. Hill said that Utes would play in the Pacific Northwest in three of every four years and in the Bay Area in one of every two years.

More Trouble for Georgia: TB King Handed Two-Game Suspension

Just when things were looking up in Athens, more trouble arrived for coach Mark Richt and his teetering program.

Tailback Caleb King, who rushed for 58 yards in Georgia's much-needed 41-14 win over Tennessee on Saturday, has been handed a two-game suspension after being arrested for failure to appear in court. King did not appear in court to address a recent speeding ticket. He is the 11th Georgia player to be arrested this season.

Pitt picked to win Big East Jamie DixonNEW YORK -- Pittsburgh was the runaway winner in the Big East coaches' preseason poll, picked to win the conference title by 12 of the 16 coaches. (Voters could not pick their own team.)

"I didn't feel any different when we were picked first than last year, when we were picked ninth,'' said head coach Jamie Dixon, who said he heard about the results when he arrived at Madison Square Garden Wednesday morning for media day.

Eric LeGrand Injury Shines Light on NCAA Rules and Enforcement

Eric LeGrand tackles Malcolm Brown

His helmet lowered, Rutgers tackle Eric LeGrand suffered the type of catastrophic spinal injury that longtime athletic trainer Charles Thompson is surprised doesn't occur more frequently.

"They think they're invincible in that helmet," said Thompson, head trainer at Princeton University and chair of the National Athletic Trainers' Association's College and University Athletic Trainers' Committee. "They think it's a video game. I guess they feel the need to put their head down and I don't think it's always because they are trying to hurt the other guy."

It was the opposite in LeGrand's case as he was the defender who initiated the contact in a game against Army on Saturday. The immediate diagnosis was that LeGrand was paralyzed from the neck down. Rutgers coach Greg Schiano had no updates on his fallen player's condition when he spoke to reporters on Wednesday.

The NCAA, like the NFL, has continued to adjust its rules over the years after similar tragedies combined with the recent revelations of the debilitating, long-lasting effects of concussions. Thompson admits there's no simple answer and it's impossible to eliminate all serious injuries from football, but he offered up one solution: more yellow flags.

"One big problem is that (illegal hits) aren't called enough," Thompson said. "The rules for spearing are there. It's written down and it's very, very clear."

Reassessing Big Ten After Hummel Injury: Purdue Not Buried Yet

Robbie Hummel tearing his ACL on the first day of practice was about the biggest possible news that could have come out of college basketball in mid-October. We're talking about arguably the best player on a team that has been waiting for four years to see this trio of star seniors lead the Boilermakers to a national championship. Obviously, the waiting game rarely works, due to injuries, transfers and myriad other factors, but Purdue was there. This was it.

Then, it was all taken away.

Only it really wasn't -- at least not for the team itself.

If you immediately counted Purdue out of national relevance, you aren't paying attention. The Boilers still have two of the nation's best players in JaJuan Johnson (probably the best big man) and E'Twaun Moore. There are several other reasons to believe Purdue is still easily a Sweet 16-caliber team -- for the third straight season -- and many were outlined by Hammer and Rails. Being a Purdue blog, it's definitely a best-case scenario picture being painted in that post, but none of it is unrealistic or unreasonable. When I went to rework my preseason rankings, I bumped the Boilers from No. 2 to No. 10.

As for within the Big Ten, Purdue still has a very legitimate shot to take the league championship. Let's take a look.

Will Rich Rodriguez survive past this season at Michigan?

There’s no shame in losing to Iowa, even at home. I just want to get that out of the way right now.
There is shame, however, in winning four Big Ten games (two against Indiana) in a little more than two seasons. That’s what Rich Rodriguez and Michigan are looking at right now. Needless to say, [...]

College Football Player Fatally Shot by Police Outside Suburban New York Bar

Filed under:

THORNWOOD, N.Y. (AP) -- A college football player parked in a fire lane outside a bar sped away from police rapping on his car window, hit an officer who clung to the hood as the sedan barreled toward a colleague, and was killed by a burst of police gunfire that pierced his windshield, authorities said.

But the father of a passenger in the car said Monday that the driver headed away because he thought police wanted him to move-and he denied that an officer was struck by the car.

Danroy "D.J." Henry, 20, had just played for Pace University in front of screaming fans during its homecoming football game against Stonehill College of Easton, Mass.-the junior defensive player's hometown. Hours later, hysterical students screamed on the sidewalk outside a strip mall as authorities tried to revive the wounded Henry, who at first had been handcuffed.

FHTV: Josh Luchs Admitted to Paying Players, but Why Now?

Former NFL agent Josh Luchs recently admitted to paying college football players -- including former NFL lineman Jonathan Ogden (pictured below) -- in hopes of having them as clients once they reached the NFL.

FanHouse TV's LeCharles Bentley believes his story but questions his motives for coming clean at this time. Bentley understands the lure of the big-time money from personal experience and shares his reaction with Pat McManamon.

With No Post-Expansion Crowns, Big East May Be Too Big

NEW YORK -- Jay Wright likened the power, depth and tradition of Big East basketball to that of the SEC in football.

"In the Southeastern Conference, in the south part of our country, football is king. It's part of the culture, so its always gonna be a force down there,'' the Villanova head coach said Wednesday at the Big East's media day at Madison Square Garden. "In the northeast part of the country, in areas where it's cold in the winter, basketball is part of the culture ... There's no basketball season -- it's all year round. When they stop playing basketball in high school, they're in an AAU tournament the next day.''

Wright was using the comparison to illustrate the strength of the league born out of basketball, rather than football in every other major conference -- and to explain why the Big East is always in the conversation about which conference is best.

The one flaw: while it has teams sprinkled throughout the rankings every week and throughout the NCAA tournament every March, since its 2005 expansion to a then-unprecedented 16 teams, no Big East has won a national championship. Four programs have gone to the Final Four in those five seasons, but the most recent national champ, Connecticut in 2004, did it before expansion. That fact surprised several coaches who were told it Monday.

Oversigning: Should It Be Banned?

Late this summer, LSU coach Les Miles came under fire for his handling of a true freshman offensive lineman by the name of Elliott Porter.

Porter was no star. But the kid had signed his National Letter of Intent--a document that committed him, literally, to LSU--in February, and he had enrolled at LSU in June. He was told he'd have a scholarship. He was told he was part of the team.

C.J. Lee Supports Gubernatorial Candidate Rick Snyder in TV Spot

Filed under:

C.J. Lee Rick SnyderC.J. Lee was a captain on the Michigan Wolverines basketball team that knocked off No. 21 Clemson and stuck with No. 2-seed Oklahoma in the 2009 NCAA tournament, but now he's done with basketball. He has a job in the private sector, but is also publicly supporting Rick Snyder, the republican candidate for governor in Michigan.

He appeared in a TV commercial for the potential governor last Monday, a spot that aired a day after a debate between Michigan's two gubernatorial candidates.

"I was asked to do a commercial," Lee told several Michigan outlets recently. "I'm not in an official role, but I'm very connected with Rick. ... I met him a number of years ago when I interned at SPARK."

Snyder is squaring off against democratic candidate Virg Bernero and leads in several polls.

The Detroit Free-Press posed the question that, should Snyder win the election, would there be a spot in his administration for the former UM guard who happened to be in Michigan's school of public policy? Reportedly, Lee met the question with a simple laugh.

Eric LeGrand Paralyzed, Rutgers Defensive Tackle in ICU

Filed under:

Rutgers' defensive tackle Eric LeGrand is paralyzed from the neck down after being injured while making a tackle against Army on Saturday, the school announced Sunday.

The injury occurred after a kickoff with 5:10 left in regulation at the New Meadowlands Stadium.

LeGrand lay motionless for seven minutes while his neck was immobilized and he was placed on a backboard. He was carted off and taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

LeGrand went through surgery to stabilize his spine. He is in intensive care at Hackensack and is expected to remain there for the near future, according to a statement released by the Rutgers athletic department.

"We want to say thank you to everyone for all of your prayers, kind words, and well wishes," the LeGrand family said in a statement. "We appreciate every single thought. Eric is in good spirits and we are praying for a full recovery."
