Conference-USA, MWC Merge to Form 'Superconference'

We have been speculating about the arrival of the so-called "superconference" in college football for some time now.

Well, maybe this qualifies (emphasis on "maybe").

On Monday, officials from the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA announced a new partnership agreement that will create a 18- to 24-team "superleague"--a conference (or, in their words, "association") that will include members from nearly coast to coast. The hope--and it seems to be a realistic one--is that by combining their strengths (relative though they may be) the leagues can gain greater leverage in the college football world and, perhaps, see their league champion catapulted further up the bowl pecking order.

College Baseball 360 Composite Top-50 Feb.22

Presented ByBaseballtips.com… After the opening weekend of the 2012 college baseball season, there was little significant movement in the CB360 top-50, based on its Composite National Rankings (CNR) formula. In fact, two of the national polls/rankings do not even update their rankings after the opening week (see below; note that all polls used in the CNR take into account games played through Feb. 19). The formula for the current CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR) now includes seven ingredients: rankings byUSA Today/ESPN (coaches), NCBWA (writers),Baseball America,Collegiate Baseballmagazine,Perfect GameandCollege Baseball Lineup, along with preseason projected season strength-of-schedule (from Boyd’s World; used for small bonus in formula). Five top-10 teams (four from the SEC) retained their same CNR position from the preseason top-50: #1 Florida, #2 South Carolina, #3 Stanford, #9 Georgia Tech and #10 LSU. Three other five top-10 teams moved up a spot ? current #4 Texas A&M, #5 Rice and #7 Arkansas ? while North Carolina slipped from #4 to #6 and Texas moved back a position to #8.

Scroll down for complete listing of the current CB360 top-50. Also see below for listing of teams that have made the biggest jumps and drops, plus newcomers and departed teams. CB360 [...]

Saturday?s College Baseball Top-50 Scoreboard & Wrapup

Scores & More Presented By Baseballtips.com… Saturday was a crazy second day of the 2012 college baseball season, simply due to the number of games being canceled, suspended or even moved up a day from Sunday. When the dust had settled at the end of Feb. 18, there had been 51 games completed featuring top-50 teams inCB360 Composite National Rankings(CNR) with 12 upsets, and eight other games that were washed out by the weather (higher-ranked teams were 39-12/.765). Two underdogs (based on the CNR) reprised their opening-day wins to clinch series victories, as Cal Poly beat #45 Oklahoma State (11-3) while #50 USC topped #39 Jacksonville (11-3). Saturday’s other top-50 upsets included: ? North Dakota State 8-2 at #14 Arizona ? Pepperdine 10-0 vs. #17 Oklahoma ? James Madison 4-4 vs. #23 Virginia (in Myrtle Beach) ? Minnesota 7-1 vs. #28 Louisville (St. Petersburg, FL) ? Boston College 8-3 at #41 Coastal Carolina ? Louisiana-Lafayette 1-0 vs. #43 Wichita State ? Santa Clara 7-1 vs. #43 Wichita State (at Texas State) ? Wright State 5-4 at #46 North Carolina State ? Santa Clara 4-3 at #47 Texas State ? College Baseball 360 Primetime Performers #1

Boston College senior shortstop Anthony Melchonda (Braintree, Mass.) and Stanford freshman lefthander John Hochstatter (Danville, Calif.) rose to the challenge during the opening week of the 2012 college baseball season and headline the first CB360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll, as presented by CollegeBaseball360.com. Melchonda and Hockstatter ? who are joined by 14 others on the Primetime Honor Roll ? are the top honorees among this group, as the CB360 Primetime Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week. The Primetime Performer awards program (also utilized on affiliate sites CollegeSports360.com, CollegeSoccer360.com and CollegeFencing360.com) seeks to recognize players based on more than simple raw stats, instead taking into account quality of opponent, contribution to team success and various situational factors (such as clutch play, all-around performance, leadership, adversity overcome, etc.). The opening-week Primetime Performer honorees include three freshman catchers:Pepperdine’sJames Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif.), Xavier’sDerek Hasenbeck (Poway, Calif.) and USC versatile newcomerGarrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif.), who also started in the outfield (LF/CF) and even played some at third base during the first week of the 2012 season. Two senior shortstops ?Cal Poly’s Mike Miller(Concord, Calif.), along with Melchionda ? also are among the 16 honorees, as are Central Michigan senior catcher [...]

The University of Florida (2-1) has been ranked No. 1 in the first regular-season NCAA Division I baseball poll of 2012 by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. TCU Stung by Drug Bust

As if we needed it, college football has yet another scandal to deal with.

The latest stunning and depressing news comes out of Fort Worth, where four TCU football players were among the 17 students arrested this week in relation to a campus drug bust. The arrests come after a six-month investigation that, according to police, included instances of Horned Frogs players selling marijuana to undercover officers.

Arizona State Looks To Overcome Adversity

Sun Devils Will Play 2012 With No Postseason Hopes… By College Baseball 360 Contributor Kevin Kennedy Kevin Kennedy provided coverage of Arizona State and Pac-10 baseball for CB360 last year, including coverage of the Cal-Dallas Baptist Super Regional. He will be providing coverage of ASU and the Pac-12 for us this year. He checks-in with a preview of the 2012 Sun Devils. Tempe, AZ — Arizona State Baseball will not be going to the College World Series or the NCAA Tournament. That sentence was the in the third paragraph of my 2011 ASU Baseball article, and statement still applies in 2012. The Sun Devils were supposed to be banned from the postseason last year because of NCAA violations that occurred under former Head Coach Pat Murphy, but because of the lengthy appeals process ASU was eligible for the 2011 postseason.Since the school was appealing the NCAAs ruling the team was eligible to play in the tournament while the appeals process was still taking place. Appeals to the NCAA usually take a few month for a ruling, and the school argued their case to the NCAA just two weeks before the tournament selections.Officially the Sun Devils were not assured of a [...]

College Baseball Thoughts Heading Into The 2012 Season

Some Things I’m Thinking About…. By College Baseball 360 Editor Sean Stires February is almost over, and that means just one thing to college baseball coaches, players and fans alike ? it?s ping time! The season starts tomorrow and every team in the country, with maybe the exception of Arizona State (see below), starts with a clean slate. Teams from Connecticut to Cal, Michigan (State if you prefer) to Miami, Oregon to Orlando (with both Stetson and UCF nearby), Tennessee to Texas, and nearly 300 points in between all have their sights set on Omaha. South Carolina is the two-time defending champ, but a stocked Florida team is the unanimous No. 1 and wants to dethrone its SEC rival. Plenty of other non-SEC teams like Stanford, North Carolina and Texas A&M to name a few are all legitimate preseason threats to the Gamecock throne. Before they get to the promised land though, they all have to navigate their own 56-game regular season gauntlets along the road to Omaha. Most of them, like Arkansas-Little Rock and New Mexico last year, won?t have the regular season credentials for even the NCAA field of 64, but they?ll get their shot if they can [...]

Texas A&M Favored To Win Big 12 Baseball Crown

Aggies Near Unanimous Pick… Texas A&M has been unanimously selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2012 Big 12 baseball regular season title. In a vote by the league’s head coaches, the Aggies earned eight first place votes, totaling 64 points. In 2011, TAMU made its fifth College World Series appearance, claimed its second-straight Big 12 postseason crown and earned a share of the regular season title. The Aggies are ranked in the top 10 of all four preseason national polls entering the 2012 campaign. Head coaches are not permitted to vote for their own team in the poll. This marks the second time Texas A&M has been selected as the top pick in the preseason poll (records dating back to 1999). The Aggies were ranked first in the preseason in 2008. Texas, who also claimed a share of the 2011 Big 12 regular season title and appeared in the CWS, ranks second with 54 total points. Oklahoma, Baylor and Missouri round out the top five spots. Florida Sits Atop College Baseball 360 Composite Top-50 Rankings

Presented By Baseballtips.com… The Florida Gators are a clear #1 in the initial College Baseball 360 Composite Top-50, a preliminary preseason look at the top teams in college baseball, based on the various national polls that already have been released. The formula for the current CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR) includes five ingredients: preseason rankings by USA Today/ESPN (coaches), NCBWA (writers), Baseball America, Collegiate Baseballmagazine, and College Baseball Lineup. Prior to opening day (Feb. 17), the CNR will be adjusted slightly after adding the Perfect Game preseason rankings and small bonus/penalty factors for projected strength-of-schedule and preseason conference polls (look for the final preseason CNR sometime next week, prior to opening day). This update also will serve to create a preseason projection of the 2012 NCAA field-of-64 (including automatic qualifiers that fall outside the CNR top-50). Florida received 99.86 points on the CNR 100-point scale, after checking in at #1 in all five polls. The Gators received 17-of-31 first-place votes in the coaches poll (South Carolina had 12; Stanford and Texas A&M one each) while earning 497 out of 500 maximum points from Collegiate Baseball ? thus accounting for Florida’s CNR point total being shy of 100.

Cristobal Turns Down Rutgers

Mario Cristobal isn't going anywhere.

Or, at the very least, he's not going to New Jersey.

On Monday night, Cristobal stunned just about everybody in the college football world--especially those up in New Brunswick, I am guessing--when he reportedly turned down the opportunity to take over as head coach of Rutgers. With Cristobal pulling out of the search, Rutgers had reportedly offered the job to assistant coach Kyle Flood. The New York Times was the first to report the Cristobal news.

Here’s a quick [...]
