For the first time during its 13-day stay in Omaha, the Arizona baseball team started a pitcher other than Kurt Heyer or Konner Wade … but the result was the same: another dominating performance on the mound and another win, for a Wildcats team that breezed through the 2012 NCAAs without a loss (10-0). NCBWA Final 2012 College Baseball Poll
Omaha Teams Comprise Top Eight… DALLAS ? The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continued its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 15th year with its 2012 weekly surveys. Polls were be circulated from Feb. 20-June 26, following the 66th annual NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., at the second-year TD Ameritade Stadium. The Arizona Wildcats (48-17) won their final 11 games, including ten in the NCAA tournament, five in Omaha and two to sweep South Carolina in the deciding series, to claim their fourth overall national title and first since 1986. The poll voters came from 42 college baseball writers and related media persons from throughout the nation. This week’s final poll has representation by 12 different conferences among the 297 baseball-playing schools in the 2012 NCAA Division I ranks, and there have been 22 circuits or independents in the surveys this season. ?Three-Peat? No Easy Feat ? Throughout NCAA Division I Sports History
The South Carolina baseball progam’s quest for a third straight NCAA title caused us to dive into the record books for various college sports, seeking to gain historical perspective on how difficult it is to “three-peat” in different NCAA-sponsored sports. A summary of the basic findings follows below (we may pass along more later, particularly if the Gamecocks win tonight’s game-2 in the best-of-3 series): When looking only at the 16 “team-based” sports currently sponsored on the Division I level (baseball, men’s & women’s basketball, women’s field hockey, football, M & W ice hockey, M & W lacrosse, M & W soccer, softball, M & W volleyball, and M & W water polo) … (Essentially, the notes below illustrate that winning three straight NCAA titles, particularly in a team-based sport, is no easy feat …) ? A team has repeated as the outright national champion three (or more) consecutive years�in a team-based sport a total of only 29 times in these 16 sports. ? South Carolina Pitcher Is Clutch – Again… Gamer. Unorthodox delivery. �Leader. Lefty.� Competitor. Two-time national champion. Good enough to win in college, but not good enough for the pros. Sound familiar? It all describes one of the best student-athletes in the history of the SEC. It? not former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow we?re talking about. It?s South Carolina pitcher Michael Roth. The senior?s big game legacy got a bit bigger on Thursday in Omaha after his complete game two-hitter willed the Gamecocks to a 4-1 College World Series elimination game win over Kent State. The victory not only allowed his team to survive for at least another game, but also cemented Roth as the best big game pitcher in the history of the CWS. End of discussion. Game Three: Arkansas 8-10-1? def. Kent State 1-4-0 OMAHA, Neb. ? Cinderella has not fared well in Omaha. First, Stony Brook dropped the 2012 College World Series opener 9-1 to UCLA on Friday and then the clock ticked closer to midnight in Cinderella?s latest twirl on the TD Ameritrade grass in Saturday?s 8-1 Kent State loss to Arkansas. After each making stunning runs to make their first CWS journeys Kent State and Stony Brook have been outscored 17-2. Worse yet, they now each find themselves on the brink of elimination. ?We either play the number one team in the country (Florida) or the two-time defending national champion (South Carolina),? Kent State head coach Scott Stricklin said afterward of the task that now awaits his team in Monday?s elimination game. It didn?t take long for the Golden Flashes? glass slipper to begin to crack on Saturday. Arkansas Razorbacks (Advanced through Houston Regional and Waco Super-Regional) Record: 44-20 Conference: Southeastern (2nd Place Western Division) Head Coach: Dave Van Horn (10th season at Arkansas; 24th season overall) First Game In Omaha: Sat., June 16 vs. Kent State (4 CT; ESPN) Series vs. Kent State: First Meeting Previous Meeting: First Meeting ROAD TO OMAHA It shouldn’t be a particular surprise that Arkansas – a youthful, but talented squad regarded highly entering the season – ended up in the College World Series. But the journey was anything but smooth. The Razorbacks spent the first month and a half of the season ranked in the national top five and stood 22-3 heading into a big road series against LSU. 2012 College World Series Schedule
Game Times, Match-Ups Announced… OMAHA, Neb. ? The game times and pairings for the first two days of the College World Series have been announced. The 66th CWS will take place at the TD Ameritrade Park Omaha from June 15-25/26. Arizona, St. John’s Ready For Rare Meeting… By CB360 Contributor Paul Fiarkoski How do you compare two teams that have didn’t play each other or any mutual team this year? In the Tucson Super Regional this weekend, the St. John’s Red Storm will no doubt assume the underdog role this weekend in the best-of-3 series with the Arizona Wildcats. What to expect It’s a forgone conclusion that Arizona will have the edge considering daytime highs are forecasted to soar into the triple digits and they’ll be playing in their own backyard. All Regional Results Included… Day one of the 2012 NCAA Baseball Tournament saw just a handful of major upsets. The biggest stories of the day though were the no-hitter thrown by Florida’s Jonathon Crawford and the 21-inning game between Kent State and Kentucky in the Gary, Ind. regional. Crawford’s no-no is just the seventh in NCAA postseason history, while the 21-inning game, won 7-6 by the Golden Flashes, is the second-longest in NCAA Tournament history. The Cardinal (who were the designated road team) scored the winning run in the top of eighth on junior shortstop Kenny Diekroeger?s RBI double down the left field line to give Stanford (40-16) a 5-4 lead. -?This is why we came to Stanford honestly, to play in front of a packed house. Marinatto Out at the Big East. Now What?
I'm not sure if this counts as good news or bad news for the conference we could have once in all sincerity called "The Big East."
John Marinatto, the man who took on the impossible task of leading America's most endangered BCS football conference back in 2009, announced on Monday that he would step down from the position. The announcement was hardly a surprise to anybody.

Paterno Family: Coach's Widow to Receive $13.4M Pension
So I guess we can't go more than a few weeks without another story about Joe Paterno, Penn State and the Jerry Sandusky scandal.
The latest "news" about this sad saga up in Happy Valley arrived Tuesday, when the Paterno family announced through its spokesman that Sue Paterno, the widow of the late Penn State coach, would receive $13.4 million in pension payments from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Kent State ? Kentucky 21-inning Game Notebook
Marathon Sees Plenty Of Unique Marks… Friday?s Kentucky-Kent State 21-inning game at the Gary Regional marked the first extra inning game of this year?s NCAA Tournament, but the fact that it was the first extra inning game didn?t even begin� to scratch the surface of its significance. The game, won 7-6 by the No. 3 seed Kent State, is the second longest in NCAA Tournament history. The only game to go longer was the 2009 25-inning game at the Austin Regional that saw Texas defeat Boston College 3-2. Texas would go on to a national runner-up finish at that year?s College World Series. The game began at 3:01 pm Central Time and ended at 9:38 pm for a total time of six hours and 37 minutes. An NCAA official said afterward that about 12 dozen baseballs were used during the game. He said the NCAA only shipped 30 dozen balls to use for the entire weekend. Each team sent five pitchers to the mound in Friday?s game. Kentucky?s A.J. Another day, another series of questions (and, of course, answers) about college football's inevitable adoption of a playoff system.
Over the past few weeks we've been looking at all the myriad issues facing the game as it struggles to create its first ever "tournament," and if we've learned anything so far, it is this: Every little detail of this new system will debated and discussed and battled over, because everyone involved in the game needs to make sure that their interests are protected first (the good of the game, as we know, always comes second).

The Cardinal (who were the designated road team) scored the winning run in the top of eighth on junior shortstop Kenny Diekroeger?s RBI double down the left field line to give Stanford (40-16) a 5-4 lead. -?This is why we came to Stanford honestly, to play in front of a packed house. More Playoff Talk: How Will Teams Be Selected?
Another day, another series of questions (and, of course, answers) about college football's inevitable adoption of a playoff system.
Over the past few weeks we've been looking at all the myriad issues facing the game as it struggles to create its first ever "tournament," and if we've learned anything so far, it is this: Every little detail of this new system will debated and discussed and battled over, because everyone involved in the game needs to make sure that their interests are protected first (the good of the game, as we know, always comes second).

Paterno Family: Coach's Widow to Receive $13.4M Pension
So I guess we can't go more than a few weeks without another story about Joe Paterno, Penn State and the Jerry Sandusky scandal.
The latest "news" about this sad saga up in Happy Valley arrived Tuesday, when the Paterno family announced through its spokesman that Sue Paterno, the widow of the late Penn State coach, would receive $13.4 million in pension payments from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
...Marinatto Out at the Big East. Now What?
I'm not sure if this counts as good news or bad news for the conference we could have once in all sincerity called "The Big East."
John Marinatto, the man who took on the impossible task of leading America's most endangered BCS football conference back in 2009, announced on Monday that he would step down from the position. The announcement was hardly a surprise to anybody.

Former West Virginia Coach Bill Stewart Dead at 59
Some sad news today out of the college football world.
Former West Virginia coach Bill Stewart, who succeeded Rich Rodriguez and delivered an emphatic Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma in his first ever game as the program's head coach, died on Monday of an apparent heart attack. He was 59.

While most people around the country were taking it easy, Manhattan pitcher Taylor Sewitt was working…and working…and working to get his team into the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Sewitt pitched an incredible 22.0 shutout innings to help propel the Manhattan Jaspers to the MAAC Tournament championship and the automatic NCAA bid that came with it. That’s no typo either. He pitched 22.0 scoreless innings over a three-day stretch. It started with a 9.0 inning complete game effort in Friday’s 1-0 elimination game win over Fairfield, continued with a 2.0 inning relief outing in a 5-4 victory against Canisius on Saturday and culminated with Sunday’s 11.0 relief stint that ended with a 3-2 win over Canisius in the MAAC championship game. Marathon Sees Plenty Of Unique Marks… Friday?s Kentucky-Kent State 21-inning game at the Gary Regional marked the first extra inning game of this year?s NCAA Tournament, but the fact that it was the first extra inning game didn?t even begin� to scratch the surface of its significance. The game, won 7-6 by the No. 3 seed Kent State, is the second longest in NCAA Tournament history. The only game to go longer was the 2009 25-inning game at the Austin Regional that saw Texas defeat Boston College 3-2. Texas would go on to a national runner-up finish at that year?s College World Series. The game began at 3:01 pm Central Time and ended at 9:38 pm for a total time of six hours and 37 minutes. Each team sent five pitchers to the mound in Friday?s game. Kentucky?s A.J. Reed, a freshman from Terre Haute, Ind making his return to his home state, had the longest outing of any of the 10 hurlers with his team?s last 9.0 innings on the mound.
