Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll ? May 28

TUCSON, Ariz. ? Louisiana St. (43-16) has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll. In one of the craziest weeks in poll history, none of the top six teams from last week escaped with a winning record as each team posted at least two losses. Oregon, previously ranked No. 1 after winning 14 of its previous 15 games, was swept in a 3-game series at Oregon St. and slipped to 10th this week. The Ducks finished third in the Pac-12 Conference with a 19-11 record after entering last week at the top of the league with a one game lead. LSU moved up to No. 1 despite posting a 1-2 record in the Southeastern Conference tournament. The Tigers won the regular season SEC title with a 19-11 record. Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Kent St. has won 17 in a row, New Mexico nine straight while Oregon St. has captured seven of its last eight. Four teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Texas (0-2 last week), Louisville (1-2), Texas Christian (1-2) and Utah Valley (4-0). New to the poll this week is New Mexico (captured the [...]

College Football Questions & Answers: The Playoff Edition

Yes, folks, it's true: College football is going to adopt a playoff system.

When the nation's conference commissioners met in Hollywood, Fla. last week to discuss the future of our beloved game, it seemed as though the single question that has lingered over our game for so long--"Should we have a playoff?--had finally been answered. And it had been answered in the affirmative. Barring some unforeseen circumstance, college football's national champion will be decided via a tournament as early as the 2014 season.

Big Ten Officials Back Bowl Sites for Playoff Games

Well, I have to admit: I didn't see this coming. But I guess I should have.

On Tuesday, officials from the Big Ten announced that they formally oppose any playoff system in which national semifinals would be played at on-campus sites. That idea, which had had gained widespread support among many northern college football fans, was seen as a potential competitive advantage for teams in the Big Ten, as SEC powers would be unlikely to savor January trips to, say, Ann Arbor, Columbus, Happy Valley or Madison. Hence, it was assumed that Big Ten officials, led by commissioner Jim Delany, would back that proposal.

A Look Back: The Downfall of Bobby Petrino

Outside of all of that playoff talk, of course, it's been the biggest story of the month in college football: The sad downfall of Bobby Petrino at Arkansas.

On April 1, Petrino was injured in a motorcycle accident. At the time, the banged-up and bruised coach was a rather sentimental figure--a beloved (to some, at least) coach who took a bad fall while out innocently cruising around on his bike.

College Baseball By The Numbers Notebook ? May 21

Number Crunching Down To The Wire… May Madness is here! Most of college baseball has crossed the regular season finish line and it’s now on to postseason conference tournaments. Most people don’t know this, but American Idol actually planned its own season finale to correspond with college baseball’s conference tournament week (that may or may not be true, but it sounds good). A good deal of this week’s installment of the notebook looks at NCAA bids & ramifications, but there’s a lot of other stuff in there as well…and Jimmy Iovine won’t be critiquing it! 3?More NCAA Tournament tickets punched over the weekend. Bethune-Cookman (MEAC), Prairie View A&M (SWAC) and Sacred Heart (Northeast) each claimed conference tournament titles to join Cornell of the Ivy League as the three teams with tickets punched to the dance so far. That leaves 26 automatic bids to be claimed in the next week before selections come out a week from today (5/29). The next bid will go to the winner of today?s Patriot League final between Army and Holy Cross. Bethune-Cookman’s title was its seventh straight.   3?Conference regular season championships to be decided this week that will determine automatic NCAA bids. The Big [...]

Marinatto Out at the Big East. Now What?

I'm not sure if this counts as good news or bad news for the conference we could have once in all sincerity called "The Big East."

John Marinatto, the man who took on the impossible task of leading America's most endangered BCS football conference back in 2009, announced on Monday that he would step down from the position. The announcement was hardly a surprise to anybody.

Sunday?s College Baseball Top-50 Scoreboard & Wrapup

Scores & More Presented ByBaseballtips.com? Oklahoma won 12-6 to complete an impressive series sweep of Baylor (cb360 #2), resurrecting the Sooners’ fading NCAA resume while highlighting Sunday’s slate of 37 games involvingtop-50 teams intheCB360Composite National Rankings. Based on the relative low number of upsets (9-25, 27%, with three rainouts), Sunday’s results more resembled Friday than Saturday, when a whopping total of 22 cb360 top-50 games were won by the underdogs (eight more than the upset total for Fri. and Sun. combined). Three underdogs posted series-deciding wins on Sunday ? most notably Vanderbilt‘s 10-inning, 5-4 win over #4 LSU (pushing the Commodores above .500, and thus NCAA tournament-eligible, for the first time all season) and Southern Mississippi‘s sweep of #28 East Carolina (5-3 resumed game, then 5-4 finale in 12).front-page photo courtesy of Oklahoma Recent(top-50 scoreboards) ? Scores & More Presented ByBaseballtips.com? In a season that has seen plenty of upsets (on a typical day, usually one-third of the top-50 games have been won by the underdogs), the favorites dominated with a vengeance on Friday, winning 82% of the games (28-6, plus five rainouts/suspended games) in action involving top-50 teams from the CB360Composite National Rankings. The most-noteworthy upset was Loyola Marymount‘s convincing 13-1 win at #20 San Diego (tightening the WCC race, due to 2nd-place Pepperdine’s 2-0 series start vs. BYU) while the day’s six head-to-head matchups between CB360- top-50 teams produced no upsets. On The Agenda: Playoff Talk

Next week, by all indications, college football will take one step closer to the adoption of a playoff system.

On Tuesday, BCS executive director Bill Hancock told the Associated Press that the details of a proposed playoff system will be discussed when conference commissioners meet next week in Florida. And though Hancock was quick to point out that nothing "final" will emerge from the meeting, and though he added that it's no slam-dunk that a playoff will ultimately be implemented, the mere fact that he is openly admitting that the idea marks a change from years' past, when the powers-that-be in college football seemed unwilling to even consider the idea.

College Baseball By The Numbers Notebook ? May 7

More Numbers Heading Down The Stretch… With less than a month to go before NCAA selections are made, here’s our latest “By The Numbers” look at the latest college baseball action… 1…NCAA Tournament ticket punched. Cornell grabbed the first automatic bid of 2012 by taking two of three games from Dartmouth in the Ivy League Championship series over the weekend. The teams split Saturday?s games and then Cornell downed the Big Green 3-1 in 11 innings on Sunday with a two-run walk-off home run from right fielder Chris Cruz. The shot was Cruz?s school record 12thof the season. The NCAA bid is just the second all-time for Cornell and its first since 1977. 28… Current winning streak for Utah Valley, which has posted wins this season over Arizona and Arizona State (the NCAA record is a 34-game winning streak, set by Texas in 1977 and matched by Florida Atlantic in ’99). Utah Valley’s conference, the Great West, does not have an automatic NCAA bid ? so the Wolverines may need to win out simply to be in the discussion for an NCAA at-large spot. Utah Valley is 35-11 overall and has a #62 RPI (per WarrenNolan.com), largely due to its [...]
