SEC: LSU Should Have Attempted Extra Point, but Tennessee Left Field

After last Saturday's crazy finish to the LSU-Tennessee game, there was rampant discussion across the Internet about the officiating in the waning moments of the 16-14 LSU victory. This week's Zebra Report covered several aspects of this, but we then received an e-mail asking why LSU wasn't required to try the extra point at the end of the game. The answer in nearly every case with a last-second touchdown is easy: teams are not required to attempt tries that have no bearing on the game.

In this case, however, the extra point should have been tried.

LSU had a two-point lead. By explicit NCAA rule (8-3-2), the "try" is an opportunity for each team to score one or two points. For example, if LSU had lined up to kick, and Tennessee came away with the ball somehow (via fumble, blocked field goal, interception, etc.), the Volunteers would then be able to return the ball for a two-point score and tie the game.

So did the officials botch this ruling? Not according to the SEC.
