Lefty Driesell Gave Madness to Midnight

Midnight officially went mad 39 years ago, and Lefty Driesell drove it there.

On October 15, 1971, then -- as now -- the first day the NCAA permitted college basketball teams to practice for the upcoming season, Driesell gathered his Maryland players on the track at Byrd Stadium at 12:01 a.m., to run a mile. Tom McMillen, a future all-America forward, was one of those players, and, he recalled last summer, "I thought it was a little crazy, us out there on the track in the middle of the night.''
