Women's Summer Session: Connecticut Still the Story

Fall is here and, yeah, it's football season, but college basketball teams around the country started workouts last week, practice starts in two weeks and when you live in Storrs, the tote board gets plugged in and warmed up.

The Connecticut women's basketball team is the most dominant force in the entire sport:

o. Two-time defending national champion and the first team in the history of the women's game to complete consecutive unbeaten seasons.

o. Players littering WNBA rosters, winning awards -- Tina Charles, Rookie of the Year and Diana Taurasi, league scoring title -- and championships: Sue Bird, Swin Cash and Svetlana Abrosimova of the Seattle Storm.

o. The Olympic coach.

o. A 78-game winning streak that will approach historic territory by Christmas.

But becoming a three-time defending champion is no gimme for the Huskies, even with best-player-in-the-land Maya Moore (above right) on the roster.

Experienced guard Caroline Doty is out for the year with another torn ACL. Charles is gone, leaving questions and inexperience in the paint.

And then there's schedule, including Baylor in Hartford in November and Stanford in California on Dec. 30 in what would be game No. 89 in the Huskies' win streak if they can hang on.

The odds, they have to catch up with the Huskies, right? Connecticut can't just keep winning and winning and winning. We are about a month and a half from finding out.
