Fordham Overcomes 21-Point Deficit, Upsets St. John's

It's shaping up to be a tough year for St. John's and its new head coach Steve Lavin -- and Big East conference play hasn't even started yet.

The Red Storm blew a 21-point second-half lead and dropped their second straight game in the final moments, losing 84-81 at Fordham. St. John's lost in the final seconds to St. Bonaventure Tuesday.

Fordham trailed 60-39 with just over 16 minutes to play before going on a 29-2 run to cut the lead to 62-58. But St. John's was able to stretch the lead back to 73-61, before Fordham answered with 13 straight points to take its first lead since the opening minutes at 74-73. The Red Storm regained the lead at 81-80, but two free throws and a Brenton Butler jumper gave Fordham the win.

The Rams (5-4) have now won three straight since being blasted by Harvard at the beginning of the month. They were 2-26 a year ago, losers of their final 21 games. This, therefore, constitutes a very bad loss for Lavin and St. John's.

Lavin's first season has been nothing if not inconsistent. After opening the season with a loss to Saint Mary's, the Red Storm reeled off five straight, including a win over Arizona State. Lavin appeared to have things moving in the right direction, but this will be something of a setback. The season will only become more difficult from here, with only one more tuneup prior to conference play.

Dwight Hardy led St. John's (5-3) with 30 points.
