Arkansas Outlasts Mississippi State in Double Overtime

Arkansas Mississippi StateSTARKVILLE, Miss. - Arkansas running back Knile Davis (right) rushed for a career-high 187 yards on 31 carries and scored three touchdowns, including the game-deciding score on a seven-yard reception, as No. 13 Arkansas outlasted No. 22 Mississippi State 38-31 in double overtime Saturday night at a raucous Davis Wade Stadium.

Arkansas (9-2, 5-2) got 306 passing yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Ryan Mallett, and 105 receiving yards from Jarius Wright.

The Arkansas victory spoiled an impressive performance from Mississippi State quarterback Chris Relf, who passed for 227 yards and rushed for 97 more. Vick Ballard rushed 34 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns.

Mississippi State (7-4, 3-4) rallied to tie the game at the buzzer after Arkansas' Davis was stripped of the ball at midfield on a third-down run with 1:56 to play. Without any timeouts, Relf and the Bulldogs moved to the Razorbacks' eight to set up a 25-yard Derek DePasquale field goal with zeros remaining on the clock.

Mississippi State was inches from scoring first in overtime, but Ballard's extra-effort stretch toward the goal line was met by an Arkansas defender's helmet that knocked the ball free and out of the end zone for a touchback.

From there, Arkansas needed only a field goal to win. Three running plays later, Zack Hocker lined up a 39-yarder for the victory - and hooked it wide left to force a second overtime.
