SEC Basketball Preview: Kentucky, Florida Lead 'Big East'

There's the Big East and the Wild, Wild West. We are describing the SEC's two division races, of course.

In the East, Florida and Kentucky are considered the favorites, while Tennessee (yes, Tennessee) Georgia and Vanderbilt also have NCAA aspirations. While it's expected to be far weaker than the East, the West has a number of teams that could emerge by season's end.

Naturally, all eyes are on Kentucky. Again.

The Wildcats lost five players (four freshmen) to the NBA Draft, but coach John Calipari is used to reeling in big-time recruiting classes. Even if Enes Kanter is not ruled eligible, guard Brandon Knight and forward Terrence Jones, among others, automatically give Kentucky Elite Eight potential.

Florida returns all five starters and adds a solid freshman class. The Gators returned to the NCAA tournament last season after missing out the previous two seasons.

Mississippi State is one of those teams that could make a run at the SEC title, even if it's in the West.

The Bulldogs, however, will be a work in progress until SEC play due to suspensions. Big man Renardo Sidney (nine-game suspension) and guard Dee Bost (nine-game suspension following academic ineligibility for the fall semester) will miss valuable early valuable time.
