Butler Hangs Final Four Banner, Throttles Marian in Opener

Filed under:

The storied Hinkle Fieldhouse rafters have never seen a Final Four banner -- until Saturday.

Fresh off the first Final Four appearance in school history, Butler unveiled the banner Saturday before the Bulldogs opening game of the 2010-11 season.

After announcing the starting lineup for visiting Marian, Butler had a five-minute presentation -- which included radio calls from Butler's historic tournament run last season -- culminating with the banner (pictured right) being revealed.

The crowd cheered loudly, and was then treated to a big win by their beloved Bulldogs.

Butler ran NAIA Marian out of Hinkle Fieldhouse, 83-54.

Shelvin Mack scored 20 points to pace the Bulldogs' balanced offensive attack. No one else scored more than 10 points and 11 players scored at least two. Freshman Khyle Marshall showed the athleticism he's been hyped to have -- scoring nine points and blocking two shots. Senior post player Matt Howard added nine points and seven rebounds. Perhaps most importantly, the foul-prone Howard -- who averaged 3.5 fouls per game last season -- didn't commit a single personal foul.
