Rich Ellerson Has Army Right on Track

Filed under:

Army's Rich Ellerson isn't the type of coach who makes a timeline, but after seeing the progress his team made in his first season -- the school's first five-win season since 1996 -- he knew he could be on the precipice of something special in year two.

So after spring football last season, Ellerson invited the seniors to his home and talked about the steps the program needed to take to put Army football back on the map.

"I told them that they could embrace the new culture and not waver and not tolerate from the younger players any digression, then our future would be ensured, if you will," Ellerson said.

"But that was going to be on them. I told them they had a chance this year, but if not, we'll wait for another year. But we had a chance this year. We had enough good players, we had enough momentum, we had enough of a schedule that we had a chance to have a good year if only we could do that. And they, to a man, bought in."

Army won its season opener and started the year 3-1. The Black Knights finished the regular season 6-6 with regrettable losses to military academy brethren Air Force and Navy. But for the first time in a while, the Black Knights were competitive even in defeat.
