Alexis Wangmene Returns to Texas Re-Energized After Summer in Africa

Alexis WangmeneAUSTIN, Texas -- Feeling a need to be recharged, Texas junior forward Alexis Wangmene paid an extended visit back to his native Maroua, Cameroon and also visited South Africa this past summer.

It was there during a three-week trip with his adopted family that Wangmene was able to gain even more perspective about where he is and what he wants from his basketball career going forward. Being home has that effect on Wangmene.

"First of all, I realized that I needed to be grateful for what I have and really what I needed to do in this lifetime to help other people who don't have the chance that I have," Wangmene said to FanHouse recently.

"I realized how much I love the game and how much I can help people through this game because I have a lot of kids back home looking up to me and trying to see me as an example. They ask me questions every time I go back and for me it's a reflection of who I want to become and where I can make an impact in this role. It was real interesting and it made me appreciate what I've got."

His time in South Africa was especially helpful. It was there he was able to reconnect with friends and family and reconnect with his love for the game. Being a part of the NBA's Basketball Without Borders outreach program in Johannesburg was how Wangmene first came in contact with San Antonio Spurs general manager R.C. Buford, who brought him to the United States in 2004 to become part of his family.

Women's Summer Session: Connecticut Still the Story

Fall is here and, yeah, it's football season, but college basketball teams around the country started workouts last week, practice starts in two weeks and when you live in Storrs, the tote board gets plugged in and warmed up.

The Connecticut women's basketball team is the most dominant force in the entire sport:

o. Two-time defending national champion and the first team in the history of the women's game to complete consecutive unbeaten seasons.

o. Players littering WNBA rosters, winning awards -- Tina Charles, Rookie of the Year and Diana Taurasi, league scoring title -- and championships: Sue Bird, Swin Cash and Svetlana Abrosimova of the Seattle Storm.

o. The Olympic coach.

o. A 78-game winning streak that will approach historic territory by Christmas.

But becoming a three-time defending champion is no gimme for the Huskies, even with best-player-in-the-land Maya Moore (above right) on the roster.

Experienced guard Caroline Doty is out for the year with another torn ACL. Charles is gone, leaving questions and inexperience in the paint.

And then there's schedule, including Baylor in Hartford in November and Stanford in California on Dec. 30 in what would be game No. 89 in the Huskies' win streak if they can hang on.

The odds, they have to catch up with the Huskies, right? Connecticut can't just keep winning and winning and winning. We are about a month and a half from finding out.

Marcell Dareus Reportedly Referred to Gary Wichard by John Blake

John Blake, the former University of North Carolina assistant coach tied to NFL agent Gary Wichard, reportedly recommended Wichard to Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports. The report states that Dareus informed NCAA investigators of the recommendation.

Blake and Wichard, currently at the center of investigations into agent tampering at several college football programs, have in the past denied any such endorsements, but the news surrounding Dareus puts those claims in severe doubt. Dareus, the MVP of the 2010 BCS championship game, was suspended for two games earlier this season for receiving improper benefits from agents during offseason trips to Miami.

According to the report, Blake first recruited Marceus when he was in high school, and maintained contact afterwards, eventually suggesting that Dareus and Weslye Saunders, the South Carolina tight end who has dealt with his own troubles, sign with Wichard.

Oversigning: Should It Be Banned?

Late this summer, LSU coach Les Miles came under fire for his handling of a true freshman offensive lineman by the name of Elliott Porter.

Porter was no star. But the kid had signed his National Letter of Intent--a document that committed him, literally, to LSU--in February, and he had enrolled at LSU in June. He was told he'd have a scholarship. He was told he was part of the team.
