Kyrie Irving, Duke's star freshman point guard, is out indefinitely with a sprained toe, the school announced Wednesday.Irving injured the toe late in the top-ranked Blue Devils' win over Butler Saturday, though he returned to play after missing less than two minutes in the win. Irving described the injury only as a "stumped" toe in the locker room afterward.
Duke said Irving will undergo "rest and rehabilitation" in a statement released Wednesday afternoon and did not mention any further treatment options.
"Our medical staff will continue to monitor the recovery process and he will return to action once it has sufficiently healed. ... Kyrie is an outstanding player and we are confident that he will bounce back from this setback."
Following the Blue Devils' Wednesday night win over Bradley, Krzyzewski underscored the severity of the injury."
"I can't say anything more because we are learning information but it is serious ... and whatever final decision is made will obviously be what's in his best interest and his career.
"He could be out or a long time. He could possibly be out for the year."
Irving, who is second on the Blue Devils with 17.4 points per game and leads the team in assists at 5.1 per contest, earned ACC rookie of the week honors for the third time Monday.
Irving's absence overshadowed what should be an otherwise joyous night for Duke. Mike Krzyzewski passed Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp on the all-time wins list with his 877th Wednesday night.
He is three wins from eclipsing former rival Dean Smith, wins he will almost certainly get without Irving.
